The steps in this article may improve your connection if you're using a router--and especially if you're using wi-fi. Please note that not all routers support the features listed below, so be sure to check your router's documentation for further help. You can usually find router instructions online by googling the model number from the back of your router, plus the word "instructions".
As a reminder, the Hextech Repair Tool can resolve a variety of troublesome connection issues. You can download or learn more about the repair tool here!
- Update your router's firmware
- Implement Quality of Service (QoS) on your router
- Use the 5GHz band if your router supports it
- Change your router's wifi channel
Update your router's firmware
Firmware updates help your router run more efficiently and fix bugs. Refer to your router's manual for specific updating instructions, but these steps are often accurate:
- Log into your modem or router. The IP address you type is usually 192.168.1.1, 192.168.2.1, 10.0.0.1, or 192.168.0.1.
- If you haven't logged in before, the username and password is usually both "admin" (no quotes). Sometimes, the username is "admin" and the password is blank.
- In the settings, look for an option to check for firmware updates.
- Remember, if you can't find the exact location, google the model number from the back of your router plus "instructions" for full information.
Implement Quality of Service (QoS) on your router
Use QoS when you share your internet with roommates or family members. It allows you to prioritize certain traffic (League!) through your router.
Here's how you can ensure League traffic always has enough bandwidth:
- Log into your modem or router. The IP address you type is usually 192.168.1.1, 192.168.2.1, 10.0.0.1, or 192.168.0.1.
- If you haven't logged in before, the username and password is usually both "admin" (no quotes). Sometimes, the username is "admin" and the password is blank.
- In the settings, look for "Quality of Service".
- On some routers, you can simply drag and drop to prioritize traffic after enabling the feature. In more complex setups, you may have to specify rules specifically.
- Remember, if you can't find the exact location, google the model number from the back of your router plus "instructions" for full information on how to enable QoS for your setup.
Set up a 5GHz network band
Modern routers have the ability to use two distinct types of connections (bands), either 2.4GHz or 5GHz. While the 2.4GHz band has more range, it tends to be less stable since many electronics use that same band (including microwaves!). If you can't switch to a wired connection, a 5GHz connection will minimize potential interference.
You can check if your router is dual band (supports both 5GHz and 2.4GHz) by looking up the model number from the back of your router. You can also check your wi-fi network; a 5GHz network may have 5, 5g, or 5GHz as part of its name.
Change your router's wifi channel
When there are a lot of electronic devices or wifi connections in an area, signals can overlap, which can cause conflicts and packet loss. Setting your wifi signal to a channel that doesn’t overlap with other signals can improve your connection stability and reduce packet loss.
- In the settings, look for an area to toggle the channel. It should be a dropdown of numbers 1-14.
- If you're having issues on the channel you're currently on, consider switching to a channel that doesn't overlap with that one. For example:
-
- The non-overlapping wifi channels are 1, 6, 11, and 14.
- If you're on channel 1, 2, or 3, try channel 14.
- If you're on channel 14, try 1 or 6.
- If you’re still having issues, experiment by selecting a different wireless channel until you find the best option with the least issues.
